Fitness enthusiast Briana Owens wanted to create an experience specifically with women of color in mind, while still attracting a diverse crowd of both men and women. In that vein, Spiked Spin was created. Here she talks, health, wellness, entrepreneurship, and what it means to get your mind and body SPIKED!
I have always had a relationship with wellness, and it's mainly been through the lens of disease prevention. Since I was young I can recall my mom explaining the reasons why we would eat certain foods and her goals for us to never suffer the diseases that most of my family did (high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, etc.). She was always very communicative and consistently planted seeds that apparently stuck with me. Beyond eating well, both of my parents are active -- I was enrolled in dancing school at 2 years old and can't recall a time in my life that activity was not at least a small part of my life -- I always danced, played sports, worked out, etc. When I moved to New York after graduating from college I worked in digital media and one of the best perks was being taken to the best boutique fitness classes in the city (for free). This opened my eyes to a new form of fitness in which studios were dedicated to certain types of fitness and the experience was curated, I loved the idea but often felt like the experiences were not curated with me in mind. From the music to the instructors, to the other people in the space -- it didn't feel like an experience that was authentic to who I was. While I loved the concept, I always felt a subtle discomfort and that feeling is what was the beginning of what is now Spiked Spin.
What is the inspiration behind Spiked Spin:
Spiked Spin was created out of necessity. As an avid fitness enthusiast, I was exposed to many different fitness experiences and considering them all, I felt that beyond the lack of diversity, there was a lack of effort to authentically reach audiences who existed outside of the stereotypical fitness ethos. I wanted to provide a platform specifically for those underserved groups letting them know that they are seen and deserving of a space in which they felt comfortable and empowered.
Stretch & Rest -- I always remind my clients to never underestimate the power of either.
Spinning has changed my life because it provided the spark of inspiration for me to create a brand that will positively impact the world forever. Spiked Spin is one of the greatest gifts that God has given me.
Read my bible app, or daily devotion, chat with my fiance about what we have going on for the day and then head to whatever workout I'm doing. I like to get at least 30 minutes in 5x per week.

I absolutely love staying connected to my family so I Facetime or call them every single day. I know this is not what most people think of when they hear 'self-care,' but this is one of the most important ways that I stay sane and stay reminded of why I work so hard. I also LOVE a good mani/Pedi + alone time. Whenever I can, I like to spend at least 20 minutes in my home with no tv, or music, or phone -- just me and my thoughts.
Prayer and To-Do Lists.
My workouts change literally every day but I love cycling at Spiked Spin at least 3x per week. On my off days, I like to lift weights or run.
